formative test

after three days of reviewing we took the formative test on landmarks in the 100's and the results were mixed. 17 students( 45%) earned A's or B's and six of them were a perfect 100%. But too many students received D's and F's. I don't really understand why so many students can do so well and others do so poorly. Third grade has a way of pointing out any academic weakness a student has but usually that only applies to a handful of students. This year the Math backgrounds of many of my students seem very low and that could account for the struggling students. But the FCAT doesn't allow for weaknesses. So we'll continue to try to pull up those low students BUT they must pay attention in class. we will start a new unit on Monday called "combining and comparing" Also, look for a science study guide on Tuesday--test on Thursday. Thanks.AG

An Exciting Year

Are you ready?--Ready to learn more about Math, Science, and Social Studies than you've ever learned before! Math Investigations is taught and as you may know, M.I. does not have very much homework. Grades will be given through tests and Duval County exams. Science and Social Studies will be given report card grades for the first time (instead of S/N) and a study guide will be given approx. two day before the test. It is up to the student to copy the study guide and STUDY the study guide. You can help your child in Math by practicing skip counting with them--for example 3,6,9,12...etc.
last year they should have learned to skip count by 2's, 3's, 5's, and 10's to 1,000. Now practice the 4's, 6's, 7's, 8's, and 9's.Skip counting is essential in third grade.
